Case study
Gout
The problem
Gout is a chronic condition affecting 1.2 million to 1.8 million Australians, causing severe pain, disability and heightened risk for comorbidities such as hypertension, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular events.
Gout is highly stigmatised, discouraging people from seeking or maintaining treatment. It is heavily under-reported in Māori and Pacific Islander communities.
Research insights
Consumers are often unaware of underlying causes of gout or that the condition can be very well controlled with long-term management. Stigma and outdated misconceptions affect clinical care, with many clinicians unaware of updated guidelines and treat-to-target strategies.
Approach
QUM Connect applied implementation science to design educational interventions that strengthen health professional skills in gout assessment, treat-to-target protocols, and modern flare management. We co-designed consumer resources to reduce stigma and position gout as a manageable, long-term health condition.
Outcomes and highlights
The program developed over 76 resources for health professionals and consumers.
49,000 + consumer interactions with program resources were recorded
88% overall satisfaction rate for consumer resources.
99% of health professionals reported knowledge gains and 94% committing to change practice.
